Take the first step by enrolling in The University of Mississippi Language Initiative offered through the Department of Modern Languages and the Study Abroad Office.
The Initiative offers minors in German, Japanese, or Russian, as well as scholarships to earn 6 of these hours on campus and 6 hours through a University of Mississippi-approved study abroad program in the language-appropriate country.
The program is structured so that students may complete the minor at an accelerated pace and be guaranteed a scholarship for a short-term study abroad experience. In order to satisfy the minor requirements, the program begins the summer before your freshman year.
Preference in acceptance will be given to incoming freshmen, but enrollment is also open to current UM students who have not declared a minor. Prior language experience is not required, but students must agree to complete the minor in the language of choice in order to receive the scholarship to study abroad during the summer between your first and second year in the program.
Ten full scholarships will be awarded for each of the programs to apply toward the summer session study abroad experience following the first year of the program. All Language Initiative participants will also be given special consideration for scholarship funds to be used toward a semester exchange program sponsored by The University of Mississippi. Recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need and academic record.
Deadline to apply is March 1.
