Japanese Health Care for Health Professionals Class Offered

November 13, 2007

The University of Mississippi Division of Outreach is offering a fourth class presenting Japanese customs and etiquette.  Japanese Health Care for Health Professionals will be held on Nov. 26, at the E.F. Yerby Conference Center from

6-8 p.m.  The class covers everything from the inner workings of the health insurance systems in Japan to how relationships between patients and medical professionals might differ from those in the U.S.

Barbara Thompson, senior project administrator for the Office of Professional Development & Non-Credit Education, says that knowledge of the various cultural distinctions—no matter how small—can make a big difference in making a Japanese patient feel welcome.

“The class will be useful for healthcare professionals to understand these differences so that they are able to give Japanese patients proper care while making them feel as comfortable as possible.”

The classes offered through Outreach are designed to facilitate the transition from Japan to Mississippi for Japanese moving to the area by educating and preparing the local community.  The E.F. Yerby Conference Center located at the corner of University Avenue and Grove Loop.  Parking is available behind the building.
