In the coming months, northeast Mississippi will become the new home to families moving from Japan to work for Toyota at the car company’s new Tupelo area plant. To help facilitate the transition for our new Japanese neighbors and to prepare the community to welcome its newest residents, the University of Mississippi’s Division of Outreach is offering classes focused on the nuances of Japanese customs and etiquette.
The three classes are targeted to specific groups: real estate professionals, local businesses and law enforcement officials. Each session is designed to empower the target group to work efficiently and respectfully with Japanese clients and residents.
The first session, “Real Estate Transactions with the Japanese Client,” scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, in the E.F. Yerby Conference Center Auditorium, provides information about Japanese clients’ expectations when working with real estate professionals. Points of discussion are proper etiquette when meeting with a Japanese client, business protocol and client expectations. Attendees will gain insights to help them market properties more effectively, as well as attract and maintain Japanese clients.
“Business Protocol with the Japanese Client” is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in Yerby Auditorium. The class includes information about business etiquette and common business practices in Japan. Attendees will then be able to integrate these common practices and expectations into their own businesses to attract and maintain Japanese clients.
The final session, “Law Enforcement and the Japanese Community,” slated for 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in Yerby Auditorium, is designed for all levels of law enforcement professionals. Attendees will learn about Japanese social etiquette and the customary way in which Japanese residents view and interact with law enforcement.
The classes are $10 per person. The E.F. Yerby Conference Center is at the corner of University Avenue and Grove Loop. Parking is available behind the building. Please contact Cindy Heuser at 662-915-1354 or cheuser@olemiss.edu to register.
