OXFORD, Miss. - Independent study administrators and educators from across the nation gather in Mississippi this weekend for the 2006 American Association for Collegiate Independent Study Conference.

Hosted by the University of Mississippi Office of Independent Study and Online Services, the 2006 AACIS Conference opens Friday (Nov. 3) and runs through Sunday at the Grand Casino in Tunica. Participants are convening to discuss advancements in independent study, professional development, student services and curriculum expansion.

"We here at the University of Mississippi are doing a lot of different and exciting things to extend alternative educational avenues to students of all ages, situations and geographic locations across the Southeast," said Anne Klingen, director of independent study and online services.

"Hosting the AACIS Conference is a great opportunity for us to showcase what we are doing to help the citizens of Mississippi who need alternate ways of learning."

Besides regular conference activities, AACIS attendees are visiting Oxford and can visit parts of the Delta during their time in Mississippi.

"There has not been an AACIS Conference in the South in over five years," Klingen said. "We have lots of activities planned because we want to show participants how great Mississippi - and especially our part of Mississippi - truly is." To learn more about the AACIS Conference, visit
